What is free content?

Submitted by Ricardo on 22 April, 2007 - 18:26.

"Free content" is a work that anyone is free to use, copy, distribute, study, or change. Free content refers to the following, fundamental freedoms:

  1. The freedom to use the work, for any purpose.
  2. The freedom to change the work, with access to formats which make that convenient to do.
  3. The freedom to make and redistribute copies of the work.
  4. The freedom to distribute modified versions.

In many ways free content is like free or open source software except it applies to other works such as documents and images, and not just programs. Free content is typically published under a free content license.
